Meet the Staff

Reverend Mat Thomas – Senior Pastor

Reverend Mat Thomas came to Bethel in the Fall of 2003 to serve as their youth pastor. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Eastern Nazarene College in 2005 and Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Northwest Nazarene University in 2010. Currently Mat is a DMIN student at Nazarene Theological Seminary in the Black Leadership and Ministry track. Mat married the love of his life I’Esha on July 11, 2009.  They have three wonderful children. Mat is an ordained as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene. 

Mat has been serving as Bethel Church of the Nazarene’s lead pastor since 2015. Mat also serves as an instructor of philosophical ethics, church history, and theology in the Religion and Culture program at Eastern Nazarene College. In addition, Mat volunteers on several non-profit boards and is a co-leader for Quincy4Justice, Quincy Interfaith Network, and Quincy 4 Transformative Change. Pastor Mat enjoys reading, riding his bicycle, traveling, swimming, stimulating theological discussions, and cold brew coffee. Pastor Mat is passionate about the intersections of theology and justice. He is committed to dismantling white supremacy and patriarchy in the church and society. Pastor Tiffany Sawyer-Brimage – Associate Pastor-District Licensed Minister 

Pastor Tiffany is an African American Activist with roots in Washington DC, & Boston, MA. She currently is the chair of the church discipleship committee. Pastor Tiffany holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a Specialization in Advocacy. She has dedicated her life to the fight for equity and justice as she lives out God’s call for her life. Pastor Al Carroll- Assistant Pastor-District Licensed Minister

Al Carroll came to Bethel in Fall 2021 as a MDIV student at Boston University. Pastor Al serves as the chair of the church facilities committee and serves on the worship committee. She is a graduate from Point Loma Nazarene University with a Bachelor of Arts in French and Christian studies.  Pastor Al has a special interest in Spiritual Care which includes lament and mental health. She drinks an obscene amount of diet coke. She received her district license in the Church of the Nazarene in June 2023. She is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. Al.Carrroll@gmail.com 

Pastor Abby Kingsbury- Assistant Pastor-Local Licensed Minister

Pastor Abby graduated from Eastern Nazarene College in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in Christian Ministry. Abby has been on staff at Bethel since September 2022. She has taken on responsibility as the chair of the fellowship and mission’s committee. As a history teacher at a private Christian academy, Pastor Abby is able to apply her biblical knowledge with her pastoral teaching abilities in a classroom setting. Pastor Lisa McCarthy- Youth Pastor-Local Licensed Minister

Lisa graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Eastern Nazarene College in 2019. Currently, she is pursuing a Master in Divinity at Boston University’s School of Theology. Most recently, Lisa worked in the field of social work as a case manager for young adults experiencing homelessness at Father Bill’s Place in Quincy, MA. She is currently working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Some of Lisa’s other interests include reading poetry (especially the work of Mary Oliver), spending time in nature, and engaging people in authentic, intentional conversation. She has a heart for vulnerable communities and is seeking faithful ways to engage justice and create welcome in religious communities for those typically left out of Christian spaces.  She hopes always to be an individual who is growing and learning and, most importantly, nurturing a spirit-led posture of humility and active compassion. ellrose@bu.edu 

 

Pastor Freddrick Sawyer-Brimage- Assistant Pastor-Local Licensed Minister 

Freddrick is also known as “Freddrick HalleluYAH!!!” is a gospel singer, rapper, and songwriter. He is also the founder and CEO of Christ Like Muzik Group (CLMG) which is a music label that believes in the motto “all Christ all the time.” Aside from being the CEO, Freddrick manages the various artists under the label, and he has ample experience in promotion and artist management. He received his local minister’s license in the Fall of 2022.  He is passionate about communicating the Gospel in ways that resonate with hip hop culture.  fdotbooking7@gmail.com

 

Brad Duperre- Assistant Pastor-Local Licensed Minister

Pastor Brad graduated from Eastern Nazarene College with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministry in 2022. He has been on staff at Bethel Church of the Nazarene since January of 2023 and he got his local license at Bethel in April 2023. When he is not reading scripture, offering pastoral prayer, or preaching at Bethel, Pastor Brad is a middle school history teacher at Nazarene Christian Academy in New Bedford. In his work and in his ministry Brad has been able to make good use of his love of biblical scholarship and history and his passion for helping those in need. In his free-time Brad enjoys reading and exercising, especially going for runs. Brad also enjoys watching tv shows and playing video games, especially history-oriented ones. He is grateful to be a part of a community full of loving people who are intentional in their faith.  baduperre@gmail.com

 

 

Reverend Esther Bowen – Assistant Pastor

 Pastor Esther has been a member of Bethel for 50 years. She began as a very involved lay leader and eventually responded to God’s pastoral call on her life in the 1980’s. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling from Eastern Nazarene College then went on to seminary at Andover Newton Theological School where she completed an Master of Divinity. She has continued to serve the church in a number of different capacities through teaching, counseling, preaching, music and leading the liturgical worship “movement” in the church since its beginning in 1992. She has been a hospital chaplain for twenty years and is married to the delightful Keith Hemmings who makes her heart sing! Pastor Esther has a passion for liturgy, music, reading, cooking and visiting the beaches of Cape Cod as much as possible!
