“Remain in me, as I also remain in you… apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:4–5 (NIV)
As our August Sabbath draws to a close, we might be tempted to slide back into our usual pace: calendars filled, days crowded, quiet moments scarce. But the invitation of Sabbath isn’t meant to stay locked in one month. It’s a rhythm for every season.
Sabbath is not only a day — it’s a way of life.
A Deeper Rest
In Hebrews 4, we’re told there remains a Sabbath-rest for God’s people—not just one day a week, but a lifestyle of trusting God’s sufficiency over our own striving. It’s a kind of rest that can shape our choices, relationships, and priorities every day.
When we live out Sabbath values, we don’t just stop once a week—we start:
- Saying “no” to hurry.
- Choosing presence over productivity.
- Trusting God’s timing instead of forcing outcomes.
This is the long work of abiding in Christ.
Living Restfully in a Restless World
Jesus said, “Remain in me… and you will bear much fruit.” Living Sabbath every day doesn’t mean working less— it means working from a place of rest, rather than striving toward rest.
Think of it like breathing with margin. When we build pauses into our week, into our workday, even into how we talk and pray, we begin to see:
- More peace in our decisions.
- More joy in our relationships.
- More fruitfulness in our calling.
This is the heart of a Sabbath-shaped life.
Try This… A Weekly “Mini-Sabbath”
Even as your schedule fills again, consider committing to one small weekly Sabbath rhythm:
- One evening with no screens.
- A slow meal with loved ones.
- A quiet walk or moment of Scripture before the day begins.
- A boundary: “I won’t check email after 8pm.”
You don’t have to do everything. Just begin with something… and do it consistently.
