Faith at Home: Starting the New School Year With God. A family of four prepares breakfast together.

Mornings with Meaning

Start the Day with God

The start of a new school year brings alarm clocks, rushed breakfasts, and the occasional scramble to find the missing shoe. In the middle of it all, what if your family’s mornings could become moments of peace instead of chaos?

Morning routines can be sacred, even if they’re short. Whether you’re walking to the bus stop or passing a granola bar to a teen on their way out the door, there’s room to start the day with a breath, a blessing, and a moment with God.

Spiritual formation doesn’t require perfection. It simply requires intention.

Simple Morning Habits to Try

  1. Blessing Jar: Create a jar filled with slips of paper, each with a short phrase or verse like “You are not alone” or “God’s love goes with you.” Let each child pull one before school and keep it in their pocket or backpack.
  2. “Good Morning, God” Prayer: Teach a simple prayer everyone can say, either aloud or silently: Good morning, God. Thank you for this new day. Help me live with love. Say it together at the door, in the car, or quietly over breakfast.
  3. Verse of the Week Sticky Note: Choose a short Bible verse each week and write it on a sticky note. Post it by the bathroom mirror or by the front door. Practice saying it each morning and talk about what it means in your life.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.
—Psalm 143:8a (NIV)

This Faith at Home series is for families looking to add some spiritual formation practices to a busy schedule, especially at the start of a new school year. You can implement these simple ideas at any point in your children’s development to help them become more aware of God’s loving presence throughout each day.
