Faith Around the Table
Family meals don’t have to be gourmet, or even on time, to be meaningful. What matters is the chance to gather, pause, and connect. Even 15 minutes around the table can be a time of spiritual nourishment.
Jesus often taught and revealed God’s kingdom around food. In the early church, table fellowship was where grace was shared, hearts were healed, and community was built. The same can be true in your home.
Ways to Make Family Meals Sacred
- Gratitude Roundtable: During dinner, go around the table and share one thing each person is thankful for that day. Even on the hardest days, gratitude anchors us in God’s goodness.
- High–Low–God: Ask everyone to share a high (best moment), a low (hard moment), and where they saw God that day. This helps kids and teens learn to reflect spiritually.
- Prayer Dice or Spinner: Make a fun dice or spinner with different prayer styles, for example, rhyming prayer, 1-word prayer, thank-you prayer, repeat-after-me prayer, etc. Let the roll or spin decide how grace is offered that night!
They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.
—Acts 2:46 (NIV)
This Faith at Home series is for families looking to add some spiritual formation practices to a busy schedule, especially at the start of a new school year. You can implement these simple ideas at any point in your children’s development to help them become more aware of God’s loving presence throughout each day.
