Everyday Encounters with God
God doesn’t just live at church or in prayer times — God is with us in the carpool line, during math homework, and while loading the dishwasher. Helping kids notice God in everyday moments can shape how they see the world.
Spiritual formation doesn’t always look like devotions and memory verses. Sometimes, it looks like noticing beauty, asking good questions, or treating someone with kindness.
Ways to Find God in the Ordinary
- “Where Was God Today?”: During tuck-in time or on the ride home from school, ask: Where did you notice something good, kind, or beautiful today? Help your kids name that as God’s presence.
- Chore Prayers: Turn mundane tasks into moments of connection. While washing dishes, say: God, thank you for our food and our family. Or as you fold laundry: Clothe us with compassion, kindness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12)
- Blessing the Backpack (Any Day of the Week): Say a short prayer over your child’s backpack (or lunchbox, or shoes!) as they head out the door: God, go before you, walk beside you, and be within you today.
Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus…
— Colossians 3:17 (NIV)
This Faith at Home series is for families looking to add some spiritual formation practices to a busy schedule, especially at the start of a new school year. You can implement these simple ideas at any point in your children’s development to help them become more aware of God’s loving presence throughout each day.
